Design of traffic signals

Designing a signalized intersection involves two main components — a timing plan and an engineering arrangement and signal plan, both of which take into account the unique variables for each intersection.

The engineering arrangement of the intersection is based on transportation analysis and includes designing the lane arrangements for the various directions of travel and their length, planning the pedestrians’ safe crossing at zebra crossings and how the intersection will be understood and function in general. The design prepared in collaboration with the traffic designer.

The signal plan deals with time calculations and phasing as well as coordination with other traffic lights (“green wave”).
